Spring 2010 ASL Class Schedule | Summer 2010 ASL Class Schedule

About the ASL program

The ASL instructional program, under the College of Professional Studies and Outreach, offers a variety of credit and non-credit courses and training opportunities for visiting students, parents, professionals and other interested individuals including the Gallaudet community at large. Classes include instruction in ASL I-VI, Visual Gestural Communication, and ASL special topic areas as well as those designed to meet the needs of a specific professional discipline or audience. During the fall and spring semesters, classes are offered during the day, evenings, or on the weekend, meeting 1 - 2 times per week throughout the semester. During the summer, classes meet daily during three two-week intensive sessions. Classes can also be tailored to meet the needs of an organization, school or business and offered on-site at locations within the metropolitan D.C. area upon request.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent to take any PST prefixed courses. Senior high school students are eligible to enroll with written recommendation of their high school academic advisor and permission of the instructor.

ASL Class Placement

ASL classes at Gallaudet University may not be equivalent to classes you have taken at other locations. To ensure that you are placed in the class that best meets your needs, review the course descriptions and select the one that seems to fit your current skill level. Use the ASL/Interpreting Questionnaire as a guide and make sure to include this form when you send in your registration. Adjustments to your registration may be made based upon the information you provide in your questionnaire.

If you would like assistance in selecting your class, please contact ASL@gallaudet.edu to schedule time for a class placement screening. Walk-in screening times for Fall 2009 will be on Tuesday, September 1 from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon, and on Wednesday, September 2 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Class placement screenings are conducted on a first come, first serve basis. Screenings are not needed if you are registering for Visual Gestural Communication or a special topic course. If you are unable to stop by for screening, your instructor will verify your class placement during the first week of class. Based on the instructor's recommendation, you may be moved to a more appropriate class level at that time. You may request to move to a lower class level up through the first week of class. No changes in class assignment will be made after that time.
