SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Gárate is currently a faculty member in the Department of Education at Gallaudet University. Dr. Gárate's dissertation focused on investigating the effects of an ASL/English bilingual training model on the beliefs of Deaf education teachers. In 1997, she received two Masters Degrees from Gallaudet University - Deaf Education: Elementary and American Sign language Linguistics. Previously Dr. Gárate was employed with the Arlington Public Schools as a teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students; and she was the English as a Second Language Teacher/Researcher at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center in Washington, D.C. From 2001 to 2005 she was a lead mentor trainer for the Star Schools Project established by the Center for ASL/English Bilingual Education and Research. In addition, she has conducted trainings and made presentations on topics related to Bilingual Deaf Education, English as a Second Language instruction for Deaf children, literacy instruction, integrated curriculum, and ASL Linguistics to teachers, staff, and school administrators both nationally and internationally.

SPECIALIZATIONS

Bilingual Deaf Education training and research, impact of teacher's beliefs about bilingual education on language allocation (ASL and English), application of bilingual methodologies with Deaf and hard of hearing learners, and application of ASL and English linguistic knowledge within bilingual classrooms.
