SHORT BIOGRAPHY Amy Hile was hired as a faculty member in the Department of Education in August 2006. Originally from Minnesota (Twin Cities area), Amy received her B.A. in Communication Arts (now known as Communication Studies) from Gallaudet University in 1991. Amy taught American Sign Language (ASL) at the University of Minnesota for two years before resuming her M.A. studies in Deaf Education with a special focus on Elementary Education at McDaniel College (formerly known as Western Maryland College). Amy has taught at the elementary level at the Metro Deaf School (MDS), the nation's first Deaf ASL/English Bilingual charter school in Saint Paul, MN from 1993 to 2000. During her stint at MDS, she juggled several responsibilities (some at the same time) - team leader, technology liaison, board president, teacher, ASL Specialist, and many more. Before coming to Gallaudet, Amy worked as the ASL Specialist at the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe for two years. Amy is currently working on her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her doctoral studies center around the areas of ASL Development/Acquisition, Fingerspelling, and K-12 ASL/English Bilingual Education. When Amy's not busy working on her dissertation, you may find her reading novels, quilting, traveling, and walking/hiking with her dog, Chey, among many other things.
