SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Barry Bergen has been teaching at Gallaudet University since 1992. A native of New Jersey, Bergen received a B.A. magna cum laude with honors in Women's History and election to Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Rochester in 1978. He studied History at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a Chateaubriand Dissertation Research Fellowship from the government of France. Bergen completed his Ph.D. in Modern French History and Comparative History of Education at Penn in 1987, under the supervision of Jack Reece and Michael Katz. He has taught History at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Auburn University at Montgomery, and Rice University. He has received a Spencer post-doctoral fellowship from the National Academy of Education, and been a post-doctoral fellow at the Minda da Gunzberg Center for European Studies at Harvard University.
