Dr. Jeff Brune Assistant Professor of History
- Ph.D., University of Washington, History, 2007
- M.A. University of Washington, History, 1998
- B.A. Colorado College, History, 1995
SHORT BIOGRAPHY Jeff Brune came to Gallaudet in 2005. Before moving to Washington D.C. he spent 15 years in the West where he received his B.A. at Colorado College (1995) and his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Washington in Seattle (2007). He always wanted to teach at a liberal arts college, and before coming to Gallaudet he spent one semester at the University of Puget Sound and one year as a visitor at Colorado College, where he continues to teach occassionally in the summers. Dr. Brune's research focuses on the links between social, political, and cultural studies. His dissertation, "The Industrialization of American Culture," focuses on the Chicago Renaissance, a literary movement in the early twentieth century that included writers such as Theodore Dreiser who helped end the romantic tradition of American writing and set a new course for American realism. The writers of the movement grew up in the industrializing Midwest where the economic and political turbulence of the late nineteenth century affected their outlook, politics, and eventually their writing. During the course of his research he received a fellowship from the Newberry Library as well as other awards. Currently he is revising the dissertation for publication. In his spare time Dr. Brune enjoys backpacking, jogging, working out, and spending time with his dog. Although he misses the West and tries to escape there in the summer, he loves taking advantage of all the culture D.C. has to offer. Given his academic interest in urban and cultural history, he finds the city fascinating.
