Internships

Internships are an integral part of the social work major. Two semesters of internships are required for the major. This is a great opportunity for you to get experience in a social work practice setting before graduation. The internship helps you determine where you'd like to work after graduation, and provides you with invaluable networking contacts. Social work interns have worked in many settings, including vocational rehabilitation, long-term care, children and youth services, criminal justice, domestic violence, developmental disabilities, and community advocacy. Some students have also interned in developing countries working with disadvantaged populations.

Welcome to the Internship Section of the Social Work Web site. The information here will help prepare and guide you in the completion of your internship.

All students participating in the field practicum during the year are required to become members of the National Association of Social Workers and must purchase professional liability insurance through the NASW Insurance Trust during the time that you will be practicing.

How to Join the NASW

National Web site

Application
(Recommendation: select "DC Metro Washington Chapter" chapter and "Student Membership")

Social Work Professional Liability Insurance
(Recommendation: register for $1,000,000-$3,000,000 coverage on the student form: cost is $35. Answer question #5 with "in process of joining NASW".)

Internship Sites

Programs that have collaborated with us in the past are listed below by social work issues. Read about these sites and decide on the kind of internship that best matches your professional interests, previous experience, and preparation. Choose three agencies or programs and list them in the Foundation Field Placement Information Form. We will use your selections as a starting point when attempting to match you with agencies that have openings. (Note: application for an internship only applies to those individuals who have already been accepted as full-time first year students in the MSW Program.)
